Shaftesbury Avenue
Shaftesbury Avenue is named after distinguished philanthropist Lord Shaftesbury, the 7th Earl of Shaftesbury, who devoted his life to helping the poor and oppressed throughout the capital.
Designed in the late 1870's by artichect George Vulhamy and engineer Sir Joseph Bazalgette, Shaftesbury Avenue was built to ease traffic congestion and to help eradicate some of London's most squalid slums.
Today it is world famous as the main artery of London's Theatreland, boasting six theatres and two cinemas along its length.
