South London & Greenwich
The area south of the Thames has long been regarded with disdain by the rest of the city. Originally a Roman area populated with brothels, Southwark, continued to be the disreputable entertainment centre of London for centuries, with brothels, bars, and theatres outside of the City's jurisdiction. Today the south bank is one of the most exciting developing areas stretching from the South Bank Centre to Tower Bridge.
Situated on the south bank of the Thames, Greenwich takes its name from the Saxon word grenavic meaning "green village" or "town". The Georgian town centre, historic pubs and numerous attractions have all contributed toward the World Heritage Site status that UNESCO has bestowed upon Greenwich. Greenwich was
Selected as the standard point (zero degrees latitude) from which all meridians should be measured and all international clock times are
based on variations of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).
